Devotion and Relativity, Text and Context: New Frontiers of Jewish Literacy
15 W 16th St
Multiday workshop and working group.
This interdisciplinary workshop of scholars from North America, Israel, and Europe probes a central tension in Jewish Studies: a chasm typically separates those scholars who emphasize wider social and cultural contexts in which the Jewish experience has unfolded, from those whose work focuses more on the internal logic of Jewish texts and traditions. This workshop seeks to put these two perspectives into mutually enriching conversation that can at once produce new insights and pinpoint the underlying tensions.
Sponsors include the Berkeley Center for the Study of Religion, the American Academy for Jewish Research, the Salo W. and Jeannette M. Baron Foundation, and the University of Buffalo Department of Jewish Thought.
The workshop will be held at the Center for Jewish History (October 7) and Yeshivat Maharat (October 8).
Space is limited and registration is required. To register, please contact info.bcsr@berkeley.edu.
